Kellie Ayre

I am a Public Librarian in Mareeba Far North Queensland, Australia. I work with a lot of the local Indigenous kids and am interested in helping to develop literacy programs that will have a real effect on the lives of Indigenous kids. I moved from Wollongong NSW seven years ago. Wollongong is a coastal city about an hour from Sydney. The thing that I still miss is the sea. I love the beach and swimming in salt water, with waves and white sand to lie on, this is something that I have a hard time going without on the hot dry weekends in Queensland. I love working with Indigenous kids because they are spirited and cheeky and like to smile and laugh. It would be good if these kids didnt loose their easy laughter by the time they have done a couple of years at high school.

Have settled in to life @ the Main in Eagle Butte. So far have been involved in some really great projects such as the Family Services Day where basic hygene and washing supplies are distributed to families in Eagle Butte. There is always somthing going on here for the community- we have had night basketball competition, a dance for the teens and will be involved in the up coming Pow wow for labor Day. The days are very full with tending the market garden and producing canned goods from the fresh veggies in the morning to running a literacy program with the kids in the afternoon. So far it has been extremely rewarding and great fun!
