Nepal – Kathmandu Week 1

After a long flight and lost bag saga my first week in Nepal has been incredible.  Meeting new people from all over the world and being introduced to a new and interesting culture has been all that I had hoped for and more.  The week started off with me wandering around the streets of Thamel, getting hopelessly lost!   Sitting in cafes, drinking lots of tea and a few cups of good and bad coffee, writing many emails to my family and generally getting into Nepali time.

Highlights have included a very early morning start to walk up the hill to the Swayambhunath to watch the sunrise, finding out that there are plenty of cafes which have free wifi, the bright colours that surround you, the smells and sounds of a city that is new and exciting.

After a few nights in a comfy bed we, 2 fabulous volunteers, and myself headed to the villages to learn some Nepali and get an idea of how Nepalese people live in rural areas.  What a beautiful country! Heading out of the city the traffic gets less intense and the air more clear and clean.  We arrived at our host families after a few hours of Nepali language lessons and were met with smiles and warm greetings.  Life in the villages is a little slower and after an early dinner of daal bhat it was bed time around 7:30pm.  Lying in my new room listening to the sounds of the village at night – mostly just quiet and a few barking dogs across the valley I feel asleep surprisingly quickly.  This was good as I found out that the village wakes at 4am.

The next few days were filled with learning simple Nepali and making Momo’s!  Taking walks to the Golden Buddha and wandering around the countryside chatting with my fellow volunteers.  Besides the unfortunate event of dropping my glasses into the toilet (read – hole in the ground) a  very peaceful place with extremely friendly and kind people.

Back in Kathmandu enjoying a coffee and some city life before heading off to our new host families.  The days are just packed :)

Love and light
